Nigerian students are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to aid their studies, with Google reporting a 200% increase in searches combining “AI” and “studying” compared to 2024, as schools reopened nationwide.
Google’s latest Search trend data indicates students are actively using AI tools, including virtual tutors, free resources, and subject-specific prompts, to enhance learning across disciplines.
Searches for “AI + chemistry” rose by 50%, while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” each increased by 30%. Queries related to AI and grammar saw a 20% uptick.
Frequently searched questions include “What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems?” and “How to use AI to solve math problems?”
Olumide Balogun, Google’s West Africa Director, stated that the data reflects students’ strategic use of AI to deepen subject comprehension. “Nigerian learners are leveraging AI to better understand complex topics like chemistry and mathematics,” he said, adding that Google is committed to providing tools to support student success.
Beyond academics, broader interest in AI is evident, with searches for “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” each up 80%, and “who is the father of AI” rising 70%. Concerns about academic integrity are also apparent, as “AI detection” queries surged by 290%, highlighting discussions on responsible AI use in education.
Career-related searches are gaining traction, with “Generative AI” emerging as a top term alongside “professional certification,” suggesting students are preparing for AI-driven job markets. Overall, AI-related searches in Nigeria have hit an all-time high in 2025, up 60% from last year, signaling a significant shift toward digital tools in education and beyond.
